Singing “Jell-O songs” has been part of the Hoedown since the late 1990s. Because guests cannot sing together in person in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, they can participate in making the Hoedown’s first music video by filming themselves singing and/or playing “Jell-O Submarine” in the key of G major at 110 beats per minute, or so musical types advise the hostess, who is a better cook than musician.
Peter Leidy entered the 1997 Jell-O contest in the Performance Art category with a medley of familiar tunes and new lyrics. The hostess, who loves a good pun, expanded those selections into full songs and added more, as recently as 2018. Kristi Shepard suggested lyrics for “Celebrate” and “It’s Hoedown Time,” the latter because she thought it time for the country western genre to win representation on the Hoedown lineup. Peter added “The Last Hoedown” in 2007 to honor a large cohort graduating from high school.
